De landskap jag tyckte bäst om var länge stadslandskap. Jag funderar på om det inte kunde bero på hur mentala landskap uppkommer. En tänkt punkt har varken längd, bredd eller djup. Den är illusorisk, den finns inte. Ändå är den nödvändig för att få till en rät linje som tangerar en kurva utan att korsa den. Att bygga med räta linjer mot en kurvig bakgrund är ett sätt att modellera något nytt både där ute och i våra huvuden.

Allt nytt är inte bra. Överflöd utmejslar det som fungerar. Det gäller såväl inne bland hjärncellernas kopplingar som hos den övriga biologiska evolutionen. Samt i ide-sfären. Evolutionen byggde hjärnan så att störningar, som när något inte fungerar, kan orsaka felkorrigeringar på cellnivå, vilket gör fri vilja till en biologisk anpassning, inte en illusion eller ett metafysiskt mysterium. Fri vilja är inte magi, det är en teknisk lösning på problemet med olika skalor i komplexa system. Att säga att allt är likadant på alla nivåer likt en fraktal är en förenkling. Nivåerna är olika och vi kan skapa nya slags överflöd med ingenjörskonst och AI.

The landscapes I liked best for a long time were urban landscapes. I wonder if it could not be due to how mental landscapes arise. An imaginary point has neither length, width nor depth. It is illusory, it does not exist. Yet it is necessary to achieve a straight line that touches a curve without crossing it. Building with straight lines against a curvy background is a way of modeling something new both out there and in our heads.

Not everything new is good. Redundancy carves out what works. This applies within the connections of brain cells as well as in the rest of biological evolution. And in the sphere of ideas. Evolution built the brain so that disturbances, such as when something does not work, can cause error corrections at the cellular level, which makes free will a biological adaptation, not an illusion or a metaphysical mystery. Free will is not magic; it is a technical solution to the problem of different scales in complex systems. Saying that everything is the same at all levels like a fractal is a simplification. The levels are different, and we can create new kinds of redundancy with engineering and AI.
